Presidential Library Presents Virtual Collection Dedicated to the Legacy of Mirza Alakbar Sabir

A virtual collection dedicated to the rich legacy of Mirza Alakbar Sabir, a prominent representative of Azerbaijani satirical poetry and a distinguished poet, educator, and thinker, has been created in the “Literary Heritage” subsection of the Presidential Library’s “Collections” section.

Mirza Alakbar Sabir is recognized as one of the most prominent representatives of critical realism in the history of Azerbaijani literature and as a master of the poetic word who exerted a significant influence on the development of Azerbaijani social thought. While creatively continuing the rich traditions of centuries-old Azerbaijani poetry, he also introduced new themes and ideas into national literature, transforming satirical poetry into an effective vehicle for social criticism and enlightenment. Sabir’s work occupies an important place in the history of Azerbaijani literary thought as an artistic reflection of the social and cultural processes, social contradictions, and moral climate of his era.

In the early twentieth century, during a period marked by the strengthening of national awakening, enlightenment, and social renewal in Azerbaijan, the poet emerged as one of the leading figures of the literary circle that formed around the magazine “Molla Nasreddin”. In his satirical works, he sharply criticized ignorance, fanaticism, social injustice, disenfranchisement, superstition, and other social and moral problems, while calling upon society to embrace science, education, progress, national self-awareness, and civic responsibility. “Hophopname”, regarded as the crowning achievement of Sabir’s oeuvre, occupies a special place in the national literary heritage as one of the most significant examples of Azerbaijani satirical poetry.

The virtual collection presents various editions of Mirza Alakbar Sabir’s works published over different periods, editions of “Hophopname”, selected works and satires, publications issued in various languages, as well as scholarly, literary, and bibliographic sources that illuminate Sabir’s legacy within the context of Azerbaijani literary thought, the history of the press, the enlightenment movement, and national cultural development. The collected materials offer broad opportunities for exploring different aspects of the great poet’s work and for a more systematic exploration of his literary and aesthetic views and enlightenment ideas.

The virtual collection serves as a valuable information resource for researchers, philologists, teachers and students, library professionals, as well as a wide readership interested in Azerbaijani literature and the nation’s cultural heritage. The collection contributes to the wider promotion of Mirza Alakbar Sabir’s rich literary legacy, fosters greater interest in his work, and encourages a deeper exploration of his enlightenment ideas among diverse groups of readers.
