Mirza Alakbar Sabir

Mirza Alakbar Sabir is one of the most prominent representatives of critical realism in the history of Azerbaijani literature. The powerful wordsmith played a significant role in the development of national social thought. While creatively continuing the rich traditions of centuries-old Azerbaijani poetry, he also enriched Azerbaijani literature with new content and ideas, elevating it to a qualitatively higher stage of development. Sabir's work holds great importance as a literary chronicle of events occurring in the socio-political, moral, and cultural life of the people. In the early 20th century, during a period of widespread national awakening, enlightenment, and liberal ideas in Azerbaijan, the poet was a leading figure of the "Molla Nasraddin" literary school. His satirical poems sharply criticized social injustices, backwardness, ignorance, fanaticism, superstition, lawlessness, and moral deficiencies prevalent in society. Through the power of his pen, Sabir called upon the people to embrace science, education, progress, national self-awareness, and civic responsibility. Considered the pinnacle of the poet's creative output, "Hophopname" stands as one of the most valuable monuments of Azerbaijani satirical poetry. This work reflects the era’s social issues, the people's way of life, national and spiritual values, and their outlook on the future with high artistic skill. Sabir's satire influenced not only the social thought of his time but that of subsequent periods, playing a significant role in shaping the development of national literature. The objective of the presented virtual collection is to illuminate the place of the great poet within our national literary and cultural heritage, to convey his enlightenment ideas and artistic legacy to a broad readership, and to serve to further increase interest in Sabir's work.
