Anna Zelkina's book is about the relationship between the realm of ideas and the realm of matter- how a religion can reshape a society's values, social organisation and culture. It looks in particular at the impact of a Muslim mystical order- the Naqshbandi Sufi- on the social, religious and political life of the peoples of the North Caucasus, the Chechens and Daghestanis, in the first half of the nineteenth century- the period which ended with the defeat of Imam Shamil in 1859, after a war lasting more than thirty years.
