August 1 – Day of the Azerbaijani Alphabet and Language

The native language is an integral part of the cultural identity of every nation. It is the language that preserves, conveys, and develops national and spiritual values. Language is the foundation of a nationэs existence, its historical memory, and self-awareness. For the Azerbaijani people, the native language has always been a crucial element of national identity. Throughout history, it has accompanied our people, sharing all pivotal moments and important achievements. The Azerbaijani language has been the greatest spiritual heritage since ancient times, which, passing through centuries and historical trials, has reached our days, preserving its purity, power and wealth. After gaining independence, the Azerbaijani state identified the preservation, development, and widespread use of the native language as one of the priority directions of its policy. The Azerbaijani language was enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic of Azerbaijan as the state language, and since then, important state programs have been implemented in the country aimed at protecting, spreading, and popularizing language norms and rules. At the same time, favorable conditions are being created for Azerbaijanis living abroad to speak, write, and think in their native language. Opportunities for their national-cultural self-expression are expanding. The state language is not just a means of communication, it is a living symbol of national identity and independence. Caring for the language is caring for the nation’s future.
