May 9th – Victory Day

Virtual Exhibition

During the Great Patriotic War, the Azerbaijani people, along with all other peoples within the USSR, heroically resisted the Hitlerite invaders. Approximately 700 thousand of our compatriots embarked on the front lines between 1941-1945 and half of them perished with valor in the fierce battle against the ruthless enemy. Tens of thousands of our republic’s citizens, Azerbaijanis, were awarded high orders and medals for their distinguished and heroic actions in combat. 130 individuals from Azerbaijan who went to the front lines and showed heroism in battles were deemed worthy of the highest title – Hero of the Soviet Union. One of the main factors in the achieved victory was Baku oil. At that time, 70 percent of the oil produced in the Soviet Union was extracted in Azerbaijan with the dedicated efforts of Azerbaijani oil workers. Our people deeply honor the memory of our compatriots who sacrificed their lives for the victory over German fascism and always hold it in high esteem. On the occasion of "Victory Day" on May 9th, a virtual exhibition of books in various languages has been created at the Presidential Library.
