The Book of Ballads
“The Book of Ballads,” published in 1904 in English, is a new edition of the celebrated collection of humorous and parodic poems created under the joint pseudonym Bon Gaultier, used by Scottish writers William Edmonstoune and Theodore Martin. The volume presents parodic and satirical ballads that mock literary and social trends of the Victorian era. Its vivid humor, playful shifts in style, and ironic references to folk poetry made the collection one of the most popular examples of English literary parody of the 19th century. The edition is enriched with illustrations by artists known for their work in Punch and the Illustrated London News. This copy holds particular bibliographic and artistic value as a rare surviving publication from the early 20th century, reflecting the subtle English wit and the refined book-design culture of the Edward VII period.
