Geflügelte Worte
Georg Büchmann’s renowned anthology “Geflügelte Worte” (“Winged Words”) was published in 1887 in Berlin in the German language. This book is one of the most famous collections of idiomatic expressions, aphorisms, proverbs, and quotations that have become an integral part of the German language. Büchmann (1822–1884) created a foundational reference work in which he systematically compiled thousands of expressions drawn from classical antiquity, the Bible, German and world poetry, philosophy, history, and everyday speech. Following the author’s death, the work was continued and expanded by Walter Robert-Tornow, who refined and supplemented the material. Each phrase is accompanied by explanations about its origin and meaning, making the volume not only an engaging read but also a scholarly reference on Germany’s cultural memory. “Geflügelte Worte” remains an important resource for philologists, historians, literature enthusiasts, and anyone who values the richness and expressiveness of language.
