In accordance with the Decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, dated July 31, 2023, October 20 is celebrated as Zangilan City Day. In this regard, the Presidential Library has organised a book exhibition dedicated to the liberation of Zangilan from occupation, as well as to its history and cultural heritage.
The exhibition features publications dedicated to the history and culture of the Zangilan district, the period of occupation, and the reconstruction works carried out after liberation. Visitors can also explore books about the victory in the Patriotic War and the liberation of Zangilan, reflecting resilience and revival of this historic district.
In this respect, it should be recalled that as a result of successful counter-offensive operations carried out by the Azerbaijani army from the first days of the Patriotic War, which began on 27 September 2020, more than 30 settlements were liberated in the direction of Jabrayil, ensuring access to the administrative borders of the Zangilan district. On October 20, 2020, the liberation of the villages of Khavali, Zarnali, Mammadbeyli, Hakari, Sherifan, Birinji Mughanli and the city of Zangilan marked the opening of a new page in the chronicle of the liberation of the district.
Today, Zangilan has both strategic and symbolic significance in the process of restoring the liberated territories. Due to parallel demining and restoration efforts, the region’s infrastructure is rapidly being rebuilt, and the resettlement of residents to the village of Aghali, the first destination of the “Great Return”, has been completed. At the same time, Zangilan, with its high solar energy potential, plays an important role in transforming Karabakh into a “green energy” zone.
Zangilan International Airport, inaugurated on October 20, 2022 by the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev and the President of Türkiye, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, is intended to contribute to transforming the region into a leading logistics hub, ensuring its integration into the Zangezur and East-West transport corridors.
The exhibition at the Presidential Library provides everyone with an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the history and cultural heritage of Zangilan, learn more about the period of occupation, and explore publications reflecting the history of its liberation.
