The virtual collection of the Rare Books Collection at the Presidential Library has been expanded with five unique editions that represent various eras, language traditions, and fields of world literature and science.
The collection opens with the art album «Фантастические повести Н. В. Гоголя» (Fantastic Tales by Nikolai V. Gogol) published in 1892 in St. Petersburg in Russian. This is an outstanding example of book graphics from the late 19th century, featuring illustrations by Ilya Repin, Mihály Zichy, and other renowned artists. It also includes the French collection "Le Théâtre en famille" (Family Theatre) by Louis Saglier, published in Paris in the second half of the 19th century. The publication represents a rare pedagogical project of its time and reflects the educational ideals of European society of the time. Of particular interest is Max Albrecht's "Russisch Centralasien. Reisebilder aus Transkaspien, Buchara und Turkestan" (Russian Central Asia: Travel Impressions from Transcaspia, Bukhara, and Turkestan), published in Hamburg in 1896 in German. The book introduces the reader to the life and culture of Central Asia in the late 19th century through ethnographic observations and rare illustrations. The collection is complemented by Donald A. Mackenzie's seminal study, "Egyptian Myth and Legend," published in London in 1913. This work, devoted to the mythology and religious beliefs of Ancient Egypt, is of high scholarly value. The collection concludes with Jules Verne's adventure novel "Un hivernage dans les glaces" (A Winter amid the Ice), published in France at the end of the 19th century, which explores the theme of polar expeditions and human resilience in the face of harsh natural conditions.
All the presented publications have considerable historical and cultural significance, showcasing the richness of the world's literary heritage. Each book includes annotations in Azerbaijani, English, and Russian, which makes the collection accessible to a wide international audience.
The project gains significant value by making a rare collection from the Presidential Library accessible to a broader audience, allowing exploration of outstanding examples of unique publications that were previously available only to a select group of specialists.
