The book “Toponymic Crimes of Armenia” by Nazim Mustafa — a prominent researcher of Western Azerbaijan’s history, Doctor of Philosophy in History, and laureate of the State Prize — has been published by “Fuyuzat” Publishing House.
The publication opens with an overview of the ethno-demographic landscape of Western Azerbaijan, tracing the stages of the ethnic cleansing policy implemented against the Azerbaijani population and the process that resulted in the establishment of a monoethnic Armenian state on historical Azerbaijani lands. It further introduces the ethnotoponyms, anthroponyms, oronyms, hydronyms, zoo- and phytotoponyms of Western Azerbaijan, along with the microtoponyms of the city of Iravan.
The step-by-step implementation of the policy of linguistic genocide against Azerbaijani toponyms in the territory of present-day Armenia is analyzed in detail.
The book provides information on the history of establishment, geographical location, Azerbaijani settlements, and population dynamics of the 37 districts that existed in Soviet Armenia prior to the final wave of ethnic cleansing against Azerbaijanis. It also presents data on the settlements subjected to deportation during the periods of 1948–1953 and 1988–1991, along with an alphabetical list of settlements in each district whose Azerbaijani names were changed.
Based on the latest data, the book presents an alphabetical list of 717 administrative-territorial units within the Republic of Armenia that originally belonged to Azerbaijanis but have had their names changed.
For the first time, the book includes a separate section providing information about the toponymic crimes committed by the so-called “Supreme Assembly” of the self-proclaimed “Nagorno-Karabakh Republic,” established by Armenia on the territories of Azerbaijan it occupied after 1991.
The appendix section of the book features official documents related to the renaming of administrative-territorial units formerly belonging to Azerbaijanis in Armenia.
At the end of the book, map fragments covering the territory of present-day Armenia are provided for visual reference.
The book was published by the “Qarabagh” Youth Public Union for Information and Communication Technologies with the financial support of the Agency for State Support to Non-Governmental Organizations of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
