On June 24, the first volume of the book "Western Azerbaijan Heritage: Reports and materials on the consequences of the systematic destruction of the tangible and cultural heritage of Azerbaijanis in Armenia - cemeteries and international legal responsibility" was presented at the Gulustan Palace.
At the ceremony, the author of the idea for the book, Adalat Valiyev, Head of the Department for Relations with Political Parties and Legislative Authority at the Administration of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, delivered a speech highlighting that our nation is experiencing one of the most honorable periods in its history. He provided information about the ongoing efforts within the framework of the Concept of Return to Western Azerbaijan, significant events conducted by the community, and books that reflect various aspects of Western Azerbaijan's history. Adalat Valiyev stated that the book titled “Western Azerbaijan Heritage: Reports and materials on the consequences of the systematic destruction of the tangible and cultural heritage of Azerbaijanis in Armenia - cemeteries and international legal responsibility,” being presented, is the first volume in this series and has been published in a beautifully designed edition in Azerbaijani, English, and Russian languages.
Government officials, prominent scholars and intellectuals, and representatives from the public, including Professor Afet Abbasova, the Director of the Presidential Library, attended the event.
It is important to note that the fundamental research presented in the first volume of the "Western Azerbaijan Heritage" series discusses the previous and current conditions of 201 out of over 700 Azerbaijani cemeteries that existed in Western Azerbaijan—now present-day Armenia—up until 1991, of which only ruins remain today.
During the research, various topographic maps, over 250 in total, created and published by the General Staff of the Russian Empire and later the Soviet Union between 1890 and 1991 and kept classified for a long time, were utilized. Additionally, images from American reconnaissance satellites related to the last century and the modern era were incorporated, along with documents preserved in the archives of Russia, Turkey, Georgia, and Azerbaijan, sources from libraries in Germany, the USA, and Russia, photo and video materials, as well as memoirs of Azerbaijanis deported from Armenia.
The map collections referenced in the study were gathered from the Geography Department of Humboldt University in Berlin, the Institute for Geography and Geology at the University of Greifswald, the Scientific Library Collection at Indiana University, the Library of Congress in the United States, and the Historical Cartography Division of the Russian Geographical Society.
The first edition of Volume I of the book "Western Azerbaijan Heritage" has been added to the collection of the Presidential Library, serving as a valuable resource for the academic community and international audience by providing reliable documentation to confirm historical facts. This publication significantly contributes to preserving national and cultural heritage and promoting Azerbaijan's realities on the international law stage. Designed for a wide readership, especially historians, lawyers, researchers, and anyone interested in the subject, this book is housed within the rich collection of the Presidential Library, ensuring accessibility and extensive research opportunities for users.
