Academician Adila Namazova
Adila Avez gizi Namazova was born on 9 September 1926 in the village of Seyidli, Agdam District. After graduating from secondary school, she received her higher education at the Paediatrics Faculty of Azerbaijan State Medical University from 1944 to 1949.
Adila Namazova began her career in 1949 and worked as the head of the Children's Medical Consultation in the Agdam district until 1953. From 1954 to 1957, she studied at the postgraduate school of the Central Institute for the Improvement of Doctors of the USSR Ministry of Health in Moscow. After graduating from postgraduate school in 1958-1959, she was an assistant at the Department of Paediatrics of the Faculty of Treatment and Prevention at the Azerbaijan State Medical Institute, and from 1960 to 1965, she was a doctoral student at the Research Institute of Paediatrics of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR. Having tied her fate to the Azerbaijan State Medical Institute since 1965, Adila Namazova worked there as the head of the Department of Paediatrics until the end of her life.
In 1959, Adila Namazova defended her candidate's thesis, and in 1965, her doctoral dissertation. In 1966, she was awarded the academic title of professor. In 1971, she was elected a corresponding member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR, and in 1983, a full member of the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan.
Academician Adila Namazova has made a special contribution to the teaching of medical science in Azerbaijan and its enrichment with new achievements. Her research in various fields of medical science over many years has brought her great fame in our country and abroad. Adila Namazova is one of the founders of the scientific school of paediatrics in the republic. The most important areas of the scientist's fruitful scientific activity, aimed at protecting children's health, are related to the diagnosis and improvement of methods for treating rheumatism and heart defects in children. It is thanks to this scientific work that the clinical features of congenital heart defects have been studied and the criteria for surgical treatment under conditions of artificial circulation have been determined. These studies have also opened up broad opportunities for further fundamental research and the application of new treatment methods. She has also contributed to medical science with practical recommendations based on the use of various methods. Adila Namazova has made significant contributions to the organization of modern medical services in the republic.
Adila Namazova is the author of more than 400 scientific works, including 30 monographs, textbooks and methodological manuals, inventions and rationalization proposals. Her works, published in foreign languages, have been well received by the scientific community.
Demonstrating her extensive knowledge and skills during her many years of teaching, Adila Namazova paid special attention to the training of highly qualified specialists. Under her leadership, about 60 doctors of medical sciences and doctors of philosophy in medicine were trained for our republic and foreign countries. Adila Namazova worthily represented modern medical science in Azerbaijan with her insightful presentations on topical issues in paediatrics at prestigious international forums.
Adila Namazova, who was actively involved in public activities, was a People's Deputy of the USSR from 1988 to 1992 and was also elected a member of a number of international scientific societies.
She was a member of the Presidium of the Higher Attestation Commission under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, a member of the World Association of Paediatricians, President of the Azerbaijan Association of Paediatricians, Vice-President of the Society of Paediatricians of Turkic-speaking Countries, and a member of the European Association of Paediatricians.
Academician Namazova's work was always highly valued by the country's leadership. She was awarded the State Prize of the Azerbaijan SSR (1982), the honorary title of ‘Honoured Scientist’ (1982), the Shohrat Order (1996) and the Sharaf Order (2011), the Academician M. Topchibashev Prize and Medal (2005), the Certificate of Honour of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan (2016), the Mirasadulla Mirgasimov Prize of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan (2016), the G. Speransky Medal of the Union of Paediatricians of Russia (2016), and other awards.
Academician Adila Namazova passed away on 16 December 2020 in Baku.
