Academician Arif Gashimov
Arif Mammad oglu Gashimov was born on 28 September 1949 in the Shahbuz district of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic into a family of teachers.
In 1966, he enrolled in the Energy Department of the Azerbaijan Institute of Oil and Chemistry (now ASOIU - Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University), graduated from the institute in 1971, and began working as an engineer in the Electrophysics Laboratory of the Institute of Physics of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences.
In 1980, he defended his candidate's thesis at the Institute of Electrodynamics of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, and in 1993, his doctoral thesis at the same institute. His scientific activity is based on research in the field of physical and technical problems of energy, which is one of the most important areas of modern science, as well as the development and compilation of mathematical models for calculating electromagnetic wave processes in complex electrical networks, taking into account dissipative factors, devices for protecting electrical equipment from overvoltage and limiting short-circuit currents.
In 1999, the academician was elected head of the Laboratory of High Voltage Physics and Technology. Professor of the Department of High Voltage Engineering and Electrothermal Installations, Chairman of the Council for Awarding Doctoral Degrees at the Institute of Physics of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan, member of the Council for Awarding Doctoral Degrees at the Azerbaijan Scientific Research Institute of Energy and Energy Projects.
A. Gashimov was elected director of the Institute of Physics of the ANAS in 2002 and held this position until 2009.
An academician who has authored more than 310 scientific articles, dozens of patented inventions and five monographs, he was elected a full member of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan in 2007. He is a member of the editorial board of the journals ‘Electronic Processing of Materials’, published by the Institute of Applied Physics of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Moldova, ‘Technical and Physical Problems of Energy’, published by the ‘Tab-e Elm’ Scientific Centre of the Islamic Republic of Iran, International Journal of Knowledge, Science and Technology, published at the University of Bilbao, Spain, deputy editor of the journal Energy Problems, published at the Institute of Physics of the ANAS, and member of the editorial board of the journal News of the National Aerospace Agency of the Ministry of Defence Industry of the Republic of Azerbaijan. A.M. Gashimov taught at the Azerbaijan State Oil Academy for several years and was a professor in the Department of High Voltage Engineering and Electrothermal Installations.

On 21 January 2021, Academician Arif Gashimov was elected Director General of the Institute of Physics of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan (ANAS), and on 28 May 2021, he was elected Academician-Secretary of ANAS. From 5 November 2021, he held the position of First Vice-President of ANAS, and from 19 February to 25 October 2022, he served as Acting President of ANAS.
In 1978, Arif Gashimov, together with a group of authors, was awarded the State Prize of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the field of science and technology for ‘Comprehensive work on the neutral mode of high-voltage electrical networks,’ and in 2005, he was awarded the honorary title of ‘Honoured Scientist’ of the Republic of Azerbaijan. In 2019, the Institute of Physics of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan (ANAS) held a scientific session dedicated to the 70th anniversary of Academician Arif Gashimov.
