Renowned scientist and specialist in the field of Tribology and Tribotechnics — Ahad Janahmadov
Ahad Khanahmad oghlu Janahmadov was born on October 23, 1946. He is one of the distinguished scholars who has made significant contributions to the development of engineering science in Azerbaijan, particularly in the fields of tribology and tribotechnics (tribology is the science that studies the interactions of friction, wear, and lubrication; tribotechnics is the applied field that utilizes this science to control these processes in the design of technical systems and mechanisms).
After graduating from the Azerbaijan Institute of Oil and Chemistry (now the Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University) in 1969, Janahmadov demonstrated his commitment to engineering science from the very beginning of his career. His scientific explorations, which began during his postgraduate studies from 1970 to 1972 at the Institute of Mechanical Engineering of the USSR Academy of Sciences, laid the foundation for new research directions. He successfully defended his candidate of sciences dissertation in 1973 and his doctor of sciences dissertation in 1989, becoming the first doctor of science in Tribology in Azerbaijan. In 1991, he was awarded the academic title of professor.
His professional activity has been closely associated with the Azerbaijan State Oil Academy. From 1973 to 2011, he served there as an assistant, associate professor, professor, and head of department. Between 1982 and 1990, he also held the position of deputy dean for international students. Since 2011, he has been the head of the Department of Transport Mechanics at the National Aviation Academy of Azerbaijan.
Janahmadov’s scientific reputation extends beyond Azerbaijan and is widely recognized internationally. He has delivered presentations at congresses and symposia held in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Austria, Russia, Japan, Poland, and other countries, sharing valuable insights into pressing issues in engineering science. He is the author of over 400 scientific publications, including more than 60 monographs, textbooks, and teaching manuals, and holds over 30 patents, all of which have significantly contributed to the advancement of his field. His textbooks — particularly “Fundamentals of Tribology”, “Drilling Machines and Equipment”, “Applied Mechanics”, and “Aviation Materials Science” — are considered invaluable resources in engineering education.
Among his major scientific achievements are the “Thermomechanical Theory of Wear” (1988) and the “Electrothermomechanical Theory of Friction” (2012), which have enriched the theoretical foundations of tribology while also providing new interpretations of practical engineering processes.
Janahmadov’s contributions have been highly regarded by various scientific institutions. Since 2006, he has served as the chief scientific secretary and vice president of the Azerbaijan Engineering Academy, and is a full member of the International Academy of Engineering, as well as the engineering academies of Georgia, Ukraine, Russia, and Kyrgyzstan. Since 2013, he has been a member of the Presidential Council of the International Academy of Engineering, actively participating in the decision-making process on major initiatives.
The high value placed on his scientific and pedagogical work is reflected in the numerous awards he has received. These include silver and gold medals from the International Biographical Centre in the United Kingdom, accolades from the American Biographical Institute, orders and medals from the International Academy of Engineering and scientific institutions in Russia, and the honorary title of “Honored Engineer of Russia”. His decoration with jubilee medals of the Republic of Azerbaijan also reflects state-level recognition of his service.
In addition to his contributions to science and education, Janahmadov has played a key role in the editorial boards of scientific journals. Since 2009, he has served as deputy editor-in-chief of the journal “Proceedings of the Azerbaijan Engineering Academy”, and since 2013, he has been editor-in-chief of the scientific-technical journal SAEQ, published in London.
Ahad Janahmadov’s body of work is characterized by the development of fundamental research in tribology and tribotechnics, the formation of a national school of engineering, the strengthening of international scientific collaboration, and the training of a new generation of specialists.
