Eminent composer Vasif Adigozalov
Vasif Zulfugar oghlu Adigozalov was born on July 28, 1935 in Baku city. Having received his initial music education in the piano class of a specialized music school, Vasif Adigozalov entered the Uzeyir Hajibeyov Azerbaijan State Conservatory in 1953. He graduated from the conservatory in 1958 with a degree in composition and in 1959 with a degree in piano.
Vasif Adigozalov began his creative work while still a student. His first compositions were performed in 1956 at the First Congress of Azerbaijani Composers. From 1957-1959, he served as chief editor at the Azerbaijan State Television and Radio Committee; from 1959-1960 as a teacher at the Asaf Zeynalli Baku Music Technical School; from 1960-1961 as chief music editor at the Muslim Magomayev Azerbaijan State Philharmonic; from 1962-1968 as executive secretary of the Board of the Azerbaijan Composers’ Union; from 1968-1978 as artistic director of the Azerbaijan State Song and Dance Ensemble; and from 1972-1983 as director of the Asaf Zeynalli Baku Music Technical School.
In 1972, Vasif Adigozalov committed his career to the Baku Music Academy, where he made significant contributions to the training of young generations of musicians as a teacher, associate professor, professor, and head of the Choral Conducting Department. From 1990, he served as First Secretary of the Azerbaijan Composers’ Union.
Vasif Adigozalov, a distinguished representative of the great musical tradition, consistently captured the pulse of his era through his works across diverse genres. His creative output—deeply rooted in our people’s Mugham heritage—constitutes a brilliant chapter in modern Azerbaijani musical art. Adigozalov’s legacy as a pianist-performer also holds a unique place in our musical history.
Vasif Adigozalov achieved a successful synthesis of modernity and national character, creating works of enduring value. His symphonies and symphonic poems composed over the years, along with his concertos for piano and violin, oratorios, operas, and musical comedies, brought the distinguished artist great renown. His oeuvre encompasses not only symphonic, vocal-symphonic, and large-scale instrumental works but also includes fine examples of popular song genres. The composer skillfully employed the expressive means and developmental principles of all genres of Azerbaijani folk music in his works. Adigozalov’s creative output is characterized by brilliant melodicism and features derived from our national mugham traditions. The music he composed for several films and theatrical productions was also met with significant interest.
Vasif Adigozalov played a significant role in the development of the Azerbaijani school of composition. He was a figure who approached with great responsibility both the training of professional musicians and the organization of activities for the Azerbaijan Composers’ Union. Adigozalov was recognized as a true intellectual who consistently maintained a civic-minded position toward events occurring in our society.
The composer’s contributions to the development and promotion of Azerbaijani musical culture have been highly esteemed. He was awarded numerous honorary titles and decorated with the highest distinctions of the Republic of Azerbaijan—the “Shohrat” (“Glory”) Order in 1995 and the “Istiglal” (“Independence”) Order in 2005.
The eminent composer Vasif Adigozalov passed away on September 15, 2006 and was laid to rest in the Alley of Honor.
