On February 20, 2024, the Presidential Library hosted a presentation of the publication "Map of the Caucasus Region: Tiflis 1847". The publication was produced with the joint support of the Presidential Library, the Baku International Multiculturalism Center (BIMC), and the Western Azerbaijan Community.
Speaking at the event, the Director of the Presidential Library, Mayil Ahmadov, emphasized the importance of studying our history. He noted that the publication "Map of the Caucasus Region: Tiflis 1847" holds significant value in exploring the territories of Western Azerbaijan.
The event moderator, Ravan Hasanov, stated that the Georgian Military Topographic Headquarters and Tsarist Russia created the 1847 map. The maps are printed exactly as provided, with the source indicated. He noted that the map published in 1903 is more familiar to the Azerbaijani public. Furthermore, he pointed out that this map displayed the origins of the toponyms in both the Karabakh and East Zangazur economic regions and Western Azerbaijan. However, Armenians falsified and altered these maps in the early 20th century. According to Hasanov, most toponyms, hydronyms, and agronyms on the 1847 map have Azerbaijani and Turkic origins. He emphasized the importance of disseminating the map among scholars and the global community, translating it into various languages. The executive director of the BIMC announced that this process had already begun, with the map being translated into Russian and English.
The rector of Azerbaijan University of Languages, academician Kamal Abdulla, the head of the sector of the Administration of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Fuad Akhundov, the chairman of the Western Azerbaijan Community, Aziz Alakbarli, and the deputy of the Milli Majlis, Jeyhun Mammadov, emphasized that the publication of the map is a significant step in revealing the truths of Azerbaijan. It was noted that the BIMC is systematically conducting efforts in this regard.
The event continued with discussions.
