On January 18, 2010, the electronic publication "Aggression. Baku. January 20, 1990," developed by the Presidential Library, was presented.
The library's director, Mayil Ahmadov, stated that 20 years have passed since the bloody massacres committed in Baku and some regions of Azerbaijan in January 1990. During this time, various studies have been conducted, and articles and books have been written on the causes, scale, and lessons of the January 20 tragedy. Thanks to the initiative of our national leader, Heydar Aliyev, the country’s supreme legislative body has provided a political and legal assessment of this tragic event.
M. Ahmadov noted that during the bloody operation carried out in January 1990, 147 people were martyred, 744 were injured, and 841 were unlawfully arrested. He emphasized that this was the final stage of the massacres committed against the Azerbaijani people during the Soviet regime.
It was highlighted that this crime against the people was first strongly condemned by national leader Heydar Aliyev during a press conference on January 21, 1990, at Azerbaijan's Permanent Mission in Moscow. He characterized the shooting of unarmed civilians as an act that violated law, democracy, and humanity.
Later, detailed information was provided about the digital project developed by the Library.
The library director underlined that a comprehensive collection of materials on the January 20 tragedy has been presented for the first time to internet users in the virtual space, with this e-project being continuously updated. Created in Azerbaijani, Russian, and English, the project will serve as an indispensable resource for both local and international researchers, as well as anyone interested in the subject.
