Arif Malikov — an Outstanding Representative of Azerbaijan’s Musical Art

The virtual exhibition is dedicated to the life and artistic legacy of Arif Malikov, an outstanding representative of Azerbaijani professional music of the twentieth century, composer, professor, educator, People’s Artist of the USSR and the Republic of Azerbaijan and Laureate of State Awards. Arif Malikov played a significant role in the development of the Azerbaijani Composer School. By organically combining national musical traditions with modern compositional techniques, he established a distinctive and individual artistic style. His multifaceted oeuvre encompasses a wide range of genres, including symphonic and vocal-instrumental works, ballets, compositions for piano and chamber ensembles, as well as music written for films. One of the highlights of the composer’s artistic legacy is the ballet “The Legend of Love”, which achieved international recognition and became a landmark work in world ballet. The ballet’s libretto was based on Nazim Hikmet’s work of the same title, and its first production was staged in 1961. “The Legend of Love” was performed not only on the stages of Azerbaijan but also at major theatres and ballet venues around the world, bringing the composer international acclaim and occupied a notable place in history the history of world ballet. The virtual exhibition presents books, music editions, and materials related to Arif Malikov’s works, documenting different stages of his life, pedagogical career, and multifaceted creative activity.
