The book “Album livländischer Ansichten” (Album of Views of Livonia) was published in 1856 in the Latvian city of Mitau (present-day Jelgava) in the German language. This is a refined nineteenth-century artistic and documentary album compiled by the Baltic German artist and publisher Wilhelm Siegfried Stavenhagen and devoted to the picturesque corners of Livonia, a historical region of the Baltic area. The edition comprises a series of meticulously executed steel engravings depicting architectural monuments, park ensembles, natural landscapes, and scenes of everyday life in the region. Each plate of the album represents not merely an image but an authentic visual testimony of its era, conveying the Romantic perception of nature and the urban environment characteristic of the mid-nineteenth century. The author subtly recreates an atmosphere of tranquillity, nobility, and harmony inherent in Livonian landscapes, combining documentary precision with artistic refinement. The accompanying texts, prepared by various authors, organically complement the engravings with historical and cultural commentary, thereby enhancing the value of the publication as a source on the regional history, architecture, and everyday life of Livonia.
