A roundtable discussion dedicated to the book "Flora of Karabakh" was held at the Presidential Library

On January 13, 2026, a roundtable discussion dedicated to the book "Flora of Karabakh" was held at the Presidential Library. The event discussed the scientific significance of the book and the study of Karabakh's rich flora, as well as the consequences of the damage caused to the ecological environment during the occupation.

The event was opened by Professor Afet Abbasova, Director of the Presidential Library, who delivered an introductory speech highlighting the importance of the "Flora of Karabakh" for scientists, researchers, and a broad audience. She noted that in the territories that were under occupation for nearly 30 years, not only settlements and cultural heritage suffered serious damage, but also the ecological environment was severely impacted.

Speakers at the event included Professor Sayyara Ibadullayeva, General Director of the Institute of Botany of the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Scientific Editor of the book "Flora of Karabakh"; Aminagha Sadigov, Corresponding Member of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences and Deputy Director of the State Agency for Science and Higher Education; Hijran Huseynova, Professor and Chairwoman of the Milli Majlis Committee for Family and Women’s and Children’s Affairs; Irada Huseynova, Academician and Vice-President of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences; Zarifa Guliyeva, Writer and  Chairperson of the “Modern Family and Development” Public Union; Mahira Huseynova, Professor and Vice-Rector for International Relations at Azerbaijan State Pedagogical University; Aydin Asgarov, Professor and Head of the Laboratory of Systematics of Higher Plants at the Institute of Botany; Jabi Bahramov, Doctor of Philosophy in History and Head of the Department of the History of Western Azerbaijan at the A. A. Bakikhanov Institute of History and Ethnology of ANAS; Sharaf Jalilli, Doctor of Philosophy in Philology, Associate Professor, Writer, and Publicist; and Elchin Ahmadov, Professor and Head of the Karabakh Heritage Research Center of the Academy of Public Administration under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan. They discussed the scientific value of the book, the systematic presentation of Karabakh's flora, and the contribution of these studies to future biodiversity research. They also emphasized that the book is an invaluable resource for scientists, students, and biologists.

The "Flora of Karabakh" contains detailed information on the scientific classification of plant life in the Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur regions, along with rare plant species and their bioecological characteristics. It includes 8 maps, 10 tables, and illustrations of over 300 relict and endemic plant species. Overall, it provides data on more than 2000 higher plant species and over 400 types of fungi, highlighting the rich biodiversity of Karabakh.

At the conclusion of the event, a video presentation was shown, reflecting the preparation of the book and its purpose.
