Title:
Neoclassicism and Romanticism: Architecture, Sculpture, Painting, Drawing: 1750-1848
Publication date:
2007
Annotation:
This richly illustrated volume presents the reader with a comprehensive overview of the wealth and diversity of architecture and fine art of the period between 1750 and 1848. While Neoclassicism explicity refers to a reflection on the principles of art and architecture of classical antiquity, the term Romanticism encompasses a much wider meaning, and is concerned primarily with the intellectual attitude of the artist. Neoclassicism and Romanticism are therefore not to be understood as opposite poles, but "as different approaches to solving the same historic situation preceding the emergence of Modernism" (Lankheit).
