While Neoclassicism explicity refers to a reflection on the principles of art and architecture of classical antiquity, the term Romanticism encompasses a much wider meaning, and is concerned primarily with the intellectual attitude of the artist. Neoclassicism and Romanticism are therefore not to be understood as opposite poles, but "as different approaches to solving the same historic situation preceding the emergence of Modernism" (Lankheit).
