The next volume in our series deals with carved Jewish tombstones, which constitute a highly original aspect of Jewish decorative art in Ukraine and Moldavia. Created through the efforts of many generations of stone carvers, these tombstones form in themselves a special world of poignant imagery, with peculiar shapes and great local diversity. Along with still existing tombstones, the book shows magnificent extinct specimens of now destroyed cemeteries. There was a time when wooden synagogues, a unique phenomenon of East European Jewish art, formed an indispensable part of Stetls in Ukraine, Byelorussia and the Baltics/ The two world wars erased them completely from the European cultural landscape. And yet the pictture of Jewish artistic heritage of the 17th through the 19th century will be deficient, if these monuments are disregarded.
