In the set of cards dedicated to the city of Baku, one can find a series of photos that reflects the past and present of Baku, as well as pictures of architectural monuments of the city. Baku is the capital of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the biggest administrative, industrial, cultural and scientific centre of the country. The contemporary city is located on the western coast of the Caspian Sea and occupies a significant part of the Absheron peninsula. The history of Baku is connected with remote ages. The ancient city was born on a hill situated close to the sea. The origin of the word "Baku" is interpreted differently by various historians. According to one of the versions the name of the city is based on the phrase "Badi Kube" which means "a city of winds".
